University Affairs works for a second 24-hour library
College Library, located on the northwest corner of Observatory Drive and North Park Street, is currently the only 24-hour library offered to students Monday through Thursday weekly. While this provides Southeast and Downtown Madison area residents a pretty convenient library, Lakeshore residents are not so lucky.
University Affairs member, freshman Sam Seering, proposed the initiative to turn Steenbock Library into a 24-hour library at University Affair’s Tuesday night meeting. The library is currently open until 1 a.m. from Monday through Thursday, so persuading the university to add an extra seven hours will be the committee’s challenge.
Chair Fergus said there are safety concerns for those walking back from College Library late at night, and proximity is also an issue.
Fergus also said staff costs, janitorial costs and providing valid reasoning will all be barriers in convincing the university that this will benefit students.
Seering will be presenting his proposal to Student Council in the upcoming weeks.
