University Affairs to Implement New Attendance Policy

March 4, 2011

The University Affairs Committee met this last Tuesday March 1st and passed legislation for universal guidelines for excused absences across campus. Under these new rules acceptable reasons for excused absences would include illness, injury, student religious observances, death of a family member, or close friend, and participation in scheduled activities of officially organized groups, such as athletics, performing groups ect. The proposal was brought before student council on Wednesday and met favorably among council members. Final decisions for support of the policy will be decided next council meeting. The proposal will then move to the Shared Governance Committee who will decide whether or not to back the new policy and bring it forward in their individual committees. The possibility of creating a semester rental program for i-clickers was also brought up during their weekly meeting. University Affairs hope to purchase 100 i-clickers, that will be available for rental at local libraries and save student approximately $3,800 a year to purchase these clickers for class. By creating a rental program, the University committee hopes to eliminate costs of purchasing these clickers, and help students save as much as possible on yearly school expenses.

While the attendance guideline policy is well underway, the university affairs committee is still working with local Madison vendors to make the Wiscard accessible at campus restaurants.  If you have not already done so, be sure to fill out this quick survey to give your input and help the committee come to its decision!!

Also, University Affairs discussed adding a break during the fall semester outside of our scheduled winter break.  This idea is only in the preliminary stages, and further information will be given as it is provided.

Finally, the FAFSA and tax preparation week was a great success.  Approximately 100 students were able to fill out their forms and get them turned in, so, thanks to all the students who volunteered to help this week. Remember, although the week is over, if you still need help filling out your FAFSA, you can still get help at the financial aid office which is located on the 9th floor of 333 East Campus Mall. Don’t wait till it’s too late to fill out these important forms!! University Affairs is working hard to implement great ideas and policies on the UW-campus, so if you are at all curious, or would like to be a major part of the big picture, get involved! Come to a University Affairs Committee meeting every Tuesday at 6pm in the ASM office!
